Lessons in Layering

Living in San Francisco can make it difficult to plan an outfit for the day. Not only are the seasons completely wonky, but there is a lot of variance in temperatures and weather patterns even on a daily basis. Layering is absolutely essential in this type of climate, because it'll be cold and windy one minute and sunny and warm the next.

I start out with something super basic to build on. Today I did black jeans, a white cami (even if you don't need one, it provides a little extra warmth!), a loose fitting pink tee and ankle boots. Hint: Although these boots look exactly like the classic Sam Edelman ankle booties that everyone has been rocking this year, they're actually by Madden Girl and were $55. DEAL.

I built on this by adding a denim shirt - a staple for any closet that is perfect for layering. It provides more warmth than a regular button-up, but isn't bulky. Add plenty of jewelry to spice things up - I love pieces that are a little quirky like this armadillo ring from Madewell (my go-to for jewelry), and this rad necklace by In God We Trust (mine says 'Sweet Tits', but they have a ton of snarky necklaces that look innocent from far away and hilarious up close).

The final touches are those extra pieces that will add some warmth, and which can be removed mid-day when the sun is out. I got my vintage camo jacket on eBay, but there are plenty out there to choose from. The lacy scarf is a go-to of mine that goes with everything, and adds a feminine touch to balance out the bad-assery of the jacket.

Voila! You've got an outfit that will keep you warm (and cool when necessary) while staying chic.
