Look of the Day: Building on Basics

I won't be the first or the last person to tell you that accessories can make - or break - an outfit. The perfect belt can turn a dress from blah to BAM in under 5 seconds flat, while the wrong chunky necklace can leave you looking like you played dress-up in your mom's closet. It can be hard knowing where to start (and where to stop) with accessories.

When building a look that features several stand-out pieces, it's best to start with what I'd call a blank slate: an outfit built of solid basics that won't distract from the pieces you're flaunting. Today I started with a plain black tee from ASOS, gray skinny jeans from Zara, and my go-to black leather boots that I picked up from Gap last year (I listed a few similar alternatives below). It's a chic and flattering canvas for whatever direction you decide to go with accessories.

I've had this cute little spike necklace with bees on it from ASOS for a while, but haven't worn it as much as I'd like to, so I decided today was its day! It looks great against the black shirt, and the spikes bring an element of badassery to the ensemble. I added a gold cuff with a similar rocker feel to it to offset the necklace (I like a little asymmetry). I balanced these two larger pieces with pyramid studs and a dainty star ring to make the look feel finished, but not over the top.

A great look that can translate to any time of year!
